Day 14: Canton, OH to Mansfield, OH Total Distance: 58.8 mi Moving Avg: 9.2 mph Moving Time: 6:25 Climbing: 3100ft Elev: 250 ft Route Summary: OH 172 W to US 30 W Today was a real scorcher. I know the days will only get hotter, but this was the hottest I've had so far. I ended up drinking almost double the amount I have in past days. Also, I spent a fair bit of time on limited access roads again today. They weren't limited when I got on, and there was no sign anywhere along telling me to get off, so... It really wasn't that bad. The shoulder was pretty wide, and the traffic was pretty light. My cell phone got service for most of the day. Its not just interstates they paint. It seems US 30 is a pretty major throughway, so I guess it ranks high enough for ATT to consider it worth painting. This morning was another late morning. I don't think I've really had anything but late mornings so far. I tried setting an alarm this time, but I just turned it off. I suppose I could give up on getting up early, since it seems to be working OK, but I just feel like it would be better all around if I got started earlier. It wouldn't be quite as late when I am ready to stop, which would give me a bit more flexablity. And I wouldn't have to keep rushing to meet 11am checkout times. I just finished writing some perl to calculate total and average distances. So far, I seem to be pretty exactly on schedule. Hopefully, I can pull ahead a bit now that the going is flat (I hope it is flat) in preperation for the mountains. A quick word on passing cars. Most of the are pretty friendly. I'd say about 80% of those that react at all to my presence react positivly. I get a lot of well meaning double honks, although they can be really annoying from cars passing me as they tend to be rather startling. Sometimes motorists even talk to me out their windows. And example from today: "Hello. How far are you going?" "San Francisco" "Really?! I love you!" I also tend to get a lot a lot of turned heads. Especially kids in back seats. It's kinda fun. But there are still assholes out there (this is America after all). I've had people honk in frustration as they pass me, as well as a few nasty remarks shouted at me. But these are the small minority.
